The need for fact-checking is greater than ever as technological innovation becomes more deeply ingrained in our lives on a global scale. More information is now easily accessible, and the same is true of propaganda and false information.
Technology is changing how information is created, received, and interpreted as well as the amount and speed at which it is shared. If not, everyone is familiar with the media. It is our duty as public servants or watchdogs, from staff writers to senior editors who have a sincere understanding of the size of their audience. To maintain the art of authenticity and truthful reporting in journalism while keeping up with technological innovation.
The vital importance of fact-checking and the urgent need for it, steps in here as we witness the modern-day technology advancements infiltrating every aspect of our lives. Misinformation and fake news are nothing new, yet in recent years the terms have become truly mainstream and taken on a life of their own.
According to (O’Brien, C 2020) findings fake news is geminated daily he explained in his study that “Misinformation is the new normal it is now generated daily, fake news is seemingly everywhere, particularly social media sites where it spreads rapidly too easily due to shareability and sub-standard moderation.” Today, even claiming that a piece of content is misinformative could turn out to be fake news itself.
The study also showed that despite more public knowledge of the problem, many people are still interested in what else might be done to address it. These days, audio and video are produced in someone else's likeness. Most of these technological developments are now used as memes.
Therefore, there is a crucial need to fact-check as a result. Understanding how these technical advances are generated and exploited to spread misinformation is crucial as these shifts take place.
The creators of “deep fakes” as labeled by (O’Brien, C 2020) in his study, typically take hours of high-quality audio and video of the person they want to impersonate or the information they want to spread. They can now precisely match the voices of the individuals, their preferred types of material to read, and their mannerisms. Although "deep fake" technology has only had a brief lifespan thus far, the product is amazing. Developers have already produced several precise deep fakes.
As advances are made to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity. Could we see a future where fake news is dealt with decisively? (Geenens, P. 2019) argued that it will happen only should the art of fact-checking be prioritized. “These technologies are used to propagate more false narratives and skew the truth even further hence the art of fact-checking is of vital importance currently.”
As we continue into the digital era, the opportunities for fake news present rapid increase. (Geenens,P. 2019) Director of Threat Intelligence at Radware attributes this rise to the fact that "News was created and delivered by radio, TV, and newspapers, and the recipient of the news only had very limited ways to respond or interact with it before social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc.," he said.
In the past, the public's access to news and information was largely limited, which generally had a good effect on the information's quality. More chances are made to deliver information in various settings and present entirely new viewpoints as the number of ways to engage with and receive information grows.
In isolation, these new voices and inaccurate viewpoints might not reach many people, however, in a digital environment where content can be shared quickly and easily, misinformative articles rapidly find their way to the screens of many users.
People connect with one another on big search engines like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The relationships on many users' social media sites are online identities of people they know in real life.
Users frequently place a lot of trust in personal connections like these on LinkedIn. An individual is more likely to assume that information is accurate and to pass it forward to their own followers and connections if they witness one of their close, trusted connections sharing it. This can escalate very quickly and lead to fake news stories flooding social media sites.
The art of fact-checking techniques can help to lessen incorrect beliefs.
False beliefs have been reduced through fact-checking in most cases. Fact-checking serves as a pivotal tool in the fight against misinformation. Exposure to misinformation is widespread, especially on social media, misinformation appears to be more appealing to users than factually accurate information.
However, it has been demonstrated that relying heavily on crowdsourcing, delivering news literacy initiatives, and offering fact-checks all have a significant, beneficial influence on factual accuracy. Fact-checking is more important than ever since it significantly reduces incorrect beliefs over time, reducing one of the main negative effects of misinformation and eradicating the widely believed to be constantly successful kind of fake news sources.
Despite the important part that fact-checking as an art form plays. Technology also plays a role in a beneficial way. Technology for communication has certain advantages. By using technology to cut down on time and effort spent on lab work and repetitive chores, the transformation of newsrooms into the use of new technology has readily assisted journalists to be more efficient and productive.
To achieve better collaboration and better content that will draw new and paying subscribers, it has helped to better equip newsrooms and essentially rethink the workflow. The benefits of this quickly developing technology include its ability to increase productivity, source material, generate narrative ideas, discover trends, and extract information.
Regarding the financial elements, this technological innovation aids in boosting productivity and bringing down news production costs. It works by providing accurate news, expanding its social reach, marketing, and monetizing the production of news.
But everyone from politicians to commentators now uses fake news as a cultural phenomenon. It is a general, unclear word that is mainly used to cast doubt on someone. It also has a basis in actual events that are partly influenced by changing technological trends and have real effects on how viewers of media outlets consume information. However, because algorithms are created by humans, there are risks (cons) involved with developing technology, the most significant of which is algorithm bias.
Biases that affect data analysis and have negative effects will always exist. Additionally, technological content verification prior to publication is not a guarantee of error-free content. Systems for creating false information, movies (deep fakes), and fake news are also being developed with the use of this developing technology.
Social media technology helped in creating a culture that favours some information sharing over others. Although this technology is powered by algorithms, it was nonetheless created using not-perfect human tendencies, which are still the root of many problems today. “False news stories that are shared widely on social media appear to have been created without regard for their factual basis,” said (Hunt, 2016).
Technology contains fake news, which can have a variety of meanings for the user and lead to several social problems. Sadly, it is now used as a tool to stir up conflict and raise concerns about how others are being deceived by the news, as well as the increasingly clear role that technology plays in mediating news consumption.
There is evidence of the negative effects of technology and its abuse, particularly on the heavy news creation of misleading the public, even though some forms of advancing technology may have brought positive changes in the world, it remains as a weapon.
